A request was made to the online community for suggestions on a “largely unknown movie (that) is a must-watch.” An excellent query is: Since many films these days never have a wide, or any, theatrical release, it’s impossible to keep track of everything that’s out there. Reddit users reacted fast, and sure enough, a big number of their choices are not well-known. Learn what and why you should be watching.
Take Out the Block
A 2011 British film, it was described by the New York Times as “a jacked-up horror comedy that pits inner-city residents against outer space invaders.” Additionally, it was described in the official record as “fabulously inventive” and a “canny blend of jokes and jitters.” Provided you can identify the working-class English accents, that is.

This 2013 film by writer-director Jeremy Saulnier is a favorite at film festivals; it’s “smart, stripped-down, and thrillingly grim.” It demonstrates how a skillfully written tale of retribution can grip readers even in modern times.”
Brick
Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays a young recluse who breaks into a high school criminal organization in an attempt to find information regarding the whereabouts of his ex-girlfriend. A.V. Club critic Mike D’Angelo was immediately captivated by Rian Johnson’s noir 2005; he said that it had been “a long time since I’d felt a first-time director’s unmistakable presence from the instant the film began.”
Shoes of a Dead Man
This 2004 British film, according to one Reddit user, has “probably one of the best threats in films.” There are several compelling reasons to see this vengeance story about a former soldier standing up for his mentally challenged brother, but it’s also a pretty good threat (see the video).
In Bruges
In the end, Martin McDonagh’s 2008 film about two hit men hiding out in a small Belgian city is a touching drama about remorse, regret, and camaraderie. There are some funny moments (Ralph Fiennes goes completely over the top as a tough-as-nails mobster, for example). Colin Farrell gives his best performance to date in the film.

This 2009 film, which moves slowly, was dubbed “reddit’s ‘Frozen’” by one Redditer, who also asserted that “real” people haven’t heard of it. When anything goes wrong, Sam Rockwell plays an astronaut working alone on the moon. The film was praised by Roger Ebert as a “superior example of that threatened genre, hard science-fiction, which is often about the interface between humans and alien intelligence of one kind of or other, including digital.”
Foreordained
This 2014 thriller starring Ethan Hawke is described by Rotten Tomatoes as “fun genre fare with uncommon intelligence (that) offers a starmaking turn from Sarah Snook.” The film is based on the short tale “All You Zombies” by Robert A. Heinlein, which tells the narrative of a “Temporal Agent” who travels back in time to change his life and stop crimes before they happen.

This 2004 film has been dubbed “the most complicated sci-fi movie ever made.” It centers on four tech entrepreneurs whose invention has an unexpected “side effect.”
Frank and the Robot
Frank is a semiretired man who is slowly losing his mind. Robot is just a robot; it serves as Frank’s buddy and caretaker. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the film from 2012 is “a hard, funny, and realistic movie about the future.”

At the 1998 Slamdance festival, this silly, creative post-apocalyptic martial arts film took home prizes and a passionate fan base before going mostly unnoticed. In the alternate universe of the movie, organized American civilization was destroyed in 1957 by a nuclear strike from the Soviet Union, save for “Lost Vegas,” which was ruled by King Elvis.

Agent Carrie Anne Moss of the FBI is working feverishly to find three U.S. cities where nuclear bombs are scheduled to go off. said a Redditer: “I’m not the sort of person who is usually that animated while watching a film, but I distinctly remember shouting ‘OHH SH–TTT!!’ to an empty room at one point.”
What Goes On Behind Our Backs
One more vampire film? Yawn. Hold on, this one is unique. It’s very funny. According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Smarter, fresher and funnier than a modern vampire movie has any right to be, ‘What We Do on the Shadows’ is bloody good fun.”

The 1987 film about two actors on vacation was given a thoroughgoing overhaul last year, and critic Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian expressed his envy, saying he was “intensely envious of anyone seeing this glorious re-released classic for the first time.”
