The Devil Wears Prada, Mean Girls, Lost in Translation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are just a few of the fantastic films that came out in the 2000s. Really, they’re all great movies. However, there are even more outstanding films that you might not have seen since they are sadly underappreciated.
You have plenty of time to fix this, which is wonderful news. To help you, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most unappreciated movies from the 1990s. If you want to keep feeling nostalgic, here are some classic movies from the 1980s that you can watch on Netflix and the best TV series from the 1990s that you can watch right now.
Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
This dark comedy, which came before Miss Congeniality, centers on a group of beauty pageant candidates, portrayed by Denise Richards, Kirsten Dunst, and Brittany Murphy, and their fiercely competing stage moms, who will stop at nothing to win the title.
1996’s Welcome to the Dollhouse
at this coming-of-age black comedy, Heather Matarazzo is a meek, unpopular middle school student who is continuously tormented at home and at class.
1994’s Corrina
Whoopi Goldberg plays the clever housekeeper to businessman Ray Liotta and his 7-year-old daughter Molly, who is portrayed by Tina Majorino. Molly is silent following the death of his wife, but Corrina gradually restores her soul.
The Craft, 1996
Neve Campbell, Rachel True, Robin Tunney, and Fairuza Balk portray four high school students who also experiment with witchcraft. A thousand “light as a feather, stiff as a board” levitation efforts at sleepovers were sparked by this film.
1991’s Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter Is Dead
Sue Ellen Crandell (played brilliantly by Christina Applegate in her first film role) must give up her dream of spending the summer lounging on the beach with her friends after her elderly babysitter passes away unexpectedly from a heart attack. Instead, she intends to land a job at a fashion company in Los Angeles so she can support her younger siblings and earn money.
Has a coworker ever told you, “I’m right on top of that, Rose”? That originates from here.
1995’s The Baby- Babysitters Club
This one doesn’t have an elderly babysitter dying, but if you’ve read or heard of the Baby- Babysitters Club books, you should absolutely see the film adaptation, which stars Rachael Leigh Cook and Larisa Oleynik, two of the best actors of the 1990s.
Fear — 1996
In this movie, which was marketed as “Fatal Attraction for teens” at the time, Mark Wahlberg is more horrifying than ever. What the hell? Wahlberg plays a troubled bad kid who develops feelings for Reese Witherspoon, a decent girl with a hint of rebellion. Let’s just say that things take a turn even though the two do fall in love. And there’s a roller coaster sex scene that will stick in your memory forever.
1993’s The Crush
Alicia Silverstone plays a 14-year-old girl in this classic stalker film who becomes unhealthyly obsessed with a newspaper writer (Cary Elwes) who lives in her family’s guest house. She does all in her power to ruin his life when he rejects her advances (since, you know, she’s 14).
Jawbreaker (1999)
This film undoubtedly laid the stage for Mean Girls and was influenced by the cult favorite Heathers from the 1980s. Rose McGowan plays the role of the “Flawless Four’s” leader and ultimate queen bee. Julie Benz, Rebecca Gayheart, and Charlotte Ayanna are also members of the clique; however, Ayanna doesn’t appear in the movie for very long because they kill her by accidentally inserting a jawbreaker in her mouth. They enlist Fern Mayo (Judy Greer), a school misfit and murder witness, to join the group in order to hide their crime.
1995’s The Basketball Diaries

1992’s Poison Ivy

In 1999, 200 Cigarettes
The film follows the star-studded cast, which includes Gaby Hoffmann, Christina Ricci, Kate Hudson, Ben and Casey Affleck, through various scenarios as they attempt to arrive at the party before the clock strikes twelve. 1995’s How to Make an American Quilt
We’re talking about Winona Ryder, Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Alfre Woodard, Maya Angelou, and Samantha Mathis in this drama, which is based on a novel of the same name. It follows Ryder’s character, Finn, as she works on her thesis and tries to determine whether or not she is in love with her fiancé (Dermot Mulroney).
As the women labor on creating Finn’s bridal quilt, the film switches between their tales of love and grief. It will make you laugh, it will make you weep, and you will most likely find yourself viewing it more than once.
1992 Singles
It’s set in Seattle during the grunge movement and stars Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon (who has long hair!) as two Gen-Xers who are just trying to make ends meet. This movie is so ’90s, you guys. Some of the greatest bands of the time, including Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, also made appearances in the Cameron Crowe-directed romantic comedy. Of course, the soundtrack is excellent as well.
Big Girls Get Even — 1992. They Don’t Cry.
Hillary Wolf plays a teenage girl who, like most adolescent girls, is so over everyone and chooses to flee her enormous, problematic family. In the comedy, her character Laura’s enormous extended family gathers to search for her.
1990 House Party
In addition to making you laugh out loud, the comedy, which features the hip-hop combo Kid ‘n Play from the 1990s, will motivate you to have a lavish house party of your own. It gave rise to two sequels, both of which are rather good.
Girl, 1998
The star Dominique Swain is a straight-In this comedy-drama, a high school kid becomes enamored with the Portland music scene. She becomes a groupie in order to escape her dull home life after falling in love with a singer (played by Sean Patrick Flanery).
Children — 1995
You should only see this dark, unsettling drama as an adult, yet it may still leave you scarred. It focuses on a typical day in the lives of teenagers in New York City, who do drugs, drink, and engage in a lot of (unprotected) sex. Starring are Rosario Dawson, Leo Fitzpatrick, and Chloë Sevigny.
1999 Election

After finishing The Craft, you can watch this less intense spooky movie, which stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters (and witches) who work together to use practical magic to break a family curse.
1995’s Boys on the Side
Drew Barrymore, Mary-Louise Parker, and Whoopi Goldberg play three friends who go off on a cross-country road trip to cope with a number of terrible issues, including an HIV diagnosis, an abusive relationship, and a split.
1990’s Mermaids
Cher plays the glitzy and quirky single mother of two girls, Kate (Christina Ricci in her debut film appearance) and Charlotte (Winona Ryder). The story, which takes place in Massachusetts in the 1960s, follows the family as they deal with obstacles, make new friends, and—yes—swim.
1999’s A Walk on the Moon
In the summer of 1969, when both the moon landing and Woodstock are taking place, Diane Lane portrays a lonely young housewife who longs for her younger days.
