We are unable to watch all of the hundreds of films that are released each year. While many of these films are worthy of not being watched, sadly, some truly excellent ones get lost in the shuffle and go unrecognized. I consider myself a self-confessed movie buff and comedy fan, having enjoyed everything from Jim Carey’s dumb slapstick to Wes Anderson’s dry language. Some of the greatest comedies that you have probably never watched but will want to possess after seeing them are highlighted in this list.
- Inflamed
Without a doubt, Fired Up is the best underappreciated movie ever made. It features Eric Christian Olsen, who is arguably the greatest comedy performer of all time, in the first place. Nicholas D’Agosto, Danneel Ackles, AnnaLynne McCord, and John Michael Higgins are among the well-known actors in Olsen’s ensemble who have achieved some level of success in both small and large cinematic releases. Despite having a corny comedic plot, the film succeeds on a number of levels.
Two elite football players determine that skipping football camp to compete in a national cheerleading competition is the best way to carry on with their womanizing ways. Naturally, they fall in love and realize their mistakes. The film is full of memorable quotes and will make you chuckle even at the most unlikely times. You will be robbed of even more laughter if you don’t watch through the credits.
- Sexual Impulse
The fact that this film is based on a novel of the same name astonished me. The film’s poor box office performance contributed to the demise of a production firm. I contend that the movie was most likely killed by the title alone, which turned off a lot of viewers. For those who gave it a shot, this is a “coming-of-age comedy” that manages to be simultaneously earnest and irritating. Without the supporting characters, it would not be as humorous.
It has a few rising stars, such as the witty Clark Duke, and unexpected cameos by Fall Out Boy and Seth Green. Even though this movie is blatantly ridiculous, I’ll guarantee you money that you’ll laugh aloud as you watch it. If you’ve seen it, the unrated cut has a peculiar sense of humor all its own. That was the first time I watched it.
- Agreed
I am at a loss for words when it comes to Accepted’s humor. It features a very young and modest Jonah Hill and Justin Long as the budding Hollywood it boy. Although Hill steals the film with a sarcastic one-liner and a scream that belongs in the comic hall of fame, Long excels at deadpan comedy.
The movie’s premise seems ridiculous, and it is. When they are turned down by other colleges, a group of young people determined not to let their parents down start their own college. Sadly, the website they created to deceive their parents works perfectly, and they wind up with a whole student body full of outcasts and rejects. While everything is going well at first, their semester-long celebration must come to an end eventually. With build-up, conflict, and conclusion, the plot is rather conventional for a movie. Excellent comedic performance and writing are this film’s true assets, making it a remarkably underappreciated comedy.
- Holding out
If you work in or have experience in the service sector, you will find the movie Waiting to be unexpectedly humorous. It perfectly captures the experiences that those of us who have worked in the service sector face on a daily basis. Of course, they do engage in some comedic mischievous behavior, such as scheming behind the scenes and mishandling food.
I recently gave this movie another viewing, and it still holds up well. Along with several veteran character performers, it showcases a new generation of comedy actors such Ryan Reynolds, Dane Cook, Justin Long, and Anna Farris. If you have never worked in a restaurant, this movie truly isn’t as humorous, which is probably why it was neglected. I challenge those of you who have seen it to watch it without laughing uncontrollably.
P.S. A sequel was produced, however it lacks the same enchantment as Waiting.
- She Becomes Dead
Time and critical acclaim at the time of its premiere have caused this film to fade into obscurity. The truth is, this is a humorous movie—funnier than you would expect from a film about dying. Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, and Goldie Hawn are among the unknown actors that star in it. It is simultaneously sublimely ridiculous and dark.
The central plot of the film centers on a protracted romantic triangle involving Willis, Streep, and Hawn. The women visit a fortune teller who gives them a potion for perpetual life when they sense their youth ebbing away. They experience physical harm from one another, not realizing that eternal life truly means eternal. It is lighthearted while addressing a weighty issue and illuminates a shadowy area. It would be fantastic to see this movie available for streaming someplace, as it never really received the recognition it deserved and may perhaps reach a new audience.
- Evil vs. Tucker and Dale
The main reason this film is underappreciated is how narrowly it catered to its audience. It’s a horror comedy, which can sound contradictory. Even though the cast is made up of mostly unknown actors, the performance is nonetheless appropriate for the film.
The basic idea of this film is what makes it so fantastic. When a group of inebriated adolescents stumble onto Tucker and Dale’s farm, they are simply two rednecks going about their daily lives. The survivors start holding Tucker and Dale responsible for their issues as the youngsters start dying in strange accidents. I defy anyone to watch this film and not laugh a couple times.
- The Time Machine for the Hot Tub
The premise of this movie was so ridiculous that no one gave it the credit it deserved. It follows four individuals in their 40s and a younger counterpart as they journey back in time to a single weekend that shaped each of their futures. Not even with John Cusack in the cast. Crispin Glover, Clarke Duke, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Chevy Chase could prevent this film from being a box office bust.
The film is extremely funny, which is the issue. Although Hot Tube Time Machine has a lot of corny jokes and lowbrow humor, it also has deeper and funnier jokes that go beyond its surface level humor. They did gather enough momentum to produce a decent sequel, though it fell short of the first.
- Companions With Advantages
Unfortunately, this film was released right after another film with a similar premise that was a box office flop. Because of the clear parallels between this film and No Strings Attached, fans of romantic comedies decided not to see it. It was superior to the other one, which is the issue.
To begin with, Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman are not nearly as good a pair as Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. Second, the writing itself is simply superior. Compared to No Strings Attached, Friends with Benefits has a slightly darker and more genuine vibe. Whether it’s your 50th wedding anniversary or your first date, this movie is perfect.
- Virtuous Children
Though it is by far the most recent film on this list, Good Kids is already regarded as a forgotten masterpiece. The film was first released in 2016 and was only recently made available on Netflix. It centers on four young people who come to the realization that they may have lost out on some life events due to their academic aspirations. They decide to do all the things they thought they had been missing—drugs, sex, and relationships—in an effort to put things right.
This film, which borders on the vulgar, is the ideal coming-of-age comedy. Although there is a good amount of explicit stuff in this film, it is as real as it is filthy, so don’t let that stop you from watching it. I predict that this film will appear for years to come on lists of underappreciated comedies.
- Pals With Children
I could watch Friends with Kids for two hours on end and it’s a terribly overlooked film with a cast that I love. Top names on the list are Kristen Wiig, John Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, and Adam Scott. It is nearly hard to have anything not funny when you have so many entertaining people together. I believe that poor promotion was the main reason this one went unnoticed. Simply said, it wasn’t promoted to the appropriate audience and was promptly forgotten.
I would suggest this movie to anyone who enjoys comedy in general or who has children or knows someone who does. This movie is excellent for mixed company since, like most great comedies, it also has some drama. Just be advised that this film contains numerous mature scenes.
- Summer on Staten Island
Another film that was overlooked because of insufficient promotion is this one. This is just another coming-of-age film with a mediocre script that is elevated above the call of duty by a cast that includes several SNL alumni. Even though this film is incredibly extravagant in many aspects, it manages to just about pass for real. Even though the SNL cast created a lot of unique characters, I have to admit that Fred Armisen’s Victor, in the few scenes he appears in, steals the show.
- Let’s murder Ward’s spouse.
You must watch this film if you enjoy dark comedies. Apart from being a bit sarcastic about a serious matter, I don’t know why this film didn’t receive more attention than it did. Patrick Wilson, Scott Foley, Greg Grunberg, Donald Faison, and other well-known actors star in the cast.
Ward’s wife is detested by all, and with good reason. She is a horrible person who gives Ward harsh treatment. The gang makes jokes about murdering her, but are they really serious? Following a particularly annoying incident, Tom, a friend of Ward’s, recognizes an opening and ends the suffering of everyone, including Ward’s wife. More laughter follows as they work out how to dispose of the dead and come to terms with what had transpired. The most humorous aspect of this film is how unconcerned everyone seems about the fact that a murder has just occurred and a body is inside the house.
