With so many movies available, it’s simple to overlook some true gems. Trying to keep up with everything might overwhelm even the most devoted movie aficionados. Some films become enormously popular, while other equally worthy films slip into obscurity because of poor box office performance, competition from larger releases, or just time.
I’ve compiled a list of 17 underappreciated films that demand more consideration. I asked friends—both movie buffs and infrequent viewers—as well as other editors to help me choose this selection, keeping in mind a variety of genres and audience preferences. I also searched through my own memories for movies that affected me but that most people don’t seem to have seen. The Rotten Tomatoes ratings and overall recognition were the two primary factors used to rate each film. Some may be well regarded by reviewers but are still not given enough credit, while others are just unknown even though they are excellent.
Without further ado, enjoy my selection of underappreciated films that you should see.
